NMR scientists at RG Discovery provided key contributions to complete chemical structure identification of a novel antibacterial xanthone antibiotic (MBL-AB01)

Dec 19, 2025

We are very happy to share that the story of the discovery of MBL-AB01 finally has been published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology. MBL-AB01 is a novel antibacterial xanthone antibiotic displaying high activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.  The compound was isolated from a marine Actinoalloteichus, belonging to a rare and underexplored class of Actinobacteria.

Our contributions include in-depth 2D NMR studies on the small amounts isolated of this marine natural product to elucidate the chemical structure. In combination with the high-resolution MS data provided by our Norwegian collaborators the at the Biotechnology and Nanomedicine unit of SINTEF in Trondheim, the complete chemical structure was eventually identified. Given that these studies were performed several years ago, we are very satisfied to eventually share the structure and other findings about MBL-AB01 with the scientific community. We are very grateful to Håvard Sletta and all great SINTEF scientists for letting us be part of this research.

Advanced NMR studies of small molecules, peptides, proteins and other molecules is one expertise area of RG Discovery.  The exciting and challenging area of structure identification is a particular favourite area of our skilled NMR experts.
